LASA welcomes the Western Australian government’s Ageing and Disability Job Ready program and encourages aged care providers to participate in job training to extend the workforce.

LASA is represented on the Jobs and Skills WA working group and we are very pleased to be a member, with the latest SEEK study showing aged and disability support employment is one of the top job demands.

“The opportunities for working in aged care and disability support are some of the fastest growing occupations in WA,” said LASA State Manager WA Liz Behjat.

“It is also a great job, with so many stories about fulfilling careers in care because it is so important to make a real difference in people’s lives.

“Aged care and disability is about respect, dignity and people with passion. Our carers must be adequately skilled and delivering services with quality, safety and compassion, always.”

Developed in partnership with Community Skills WA and key industry partners, the Ageing and Disability Job Ready program will get people – aged 18 and over – ready with key skills and knowledge, including how to meet personal support needs.

“We welcome one of the first announcements of the new Minister for Disability Services, Seniors and Ageing, the Hon. Don Punch,” said Ms Behjat.

“In aged care across Australia, we will need at least 78,000 workers in the next decade to deal with our nation’s ageing population.

“This WA program will also provide hands-on industry experience through a work placement with an aged care or disability support employer.

“We encourage our Members and all West Australian aged and disability providers to participate if they have capacity to take on a trainee for a fortnight of on-the-job training.”

Once trainees have completed the program and are job ready to join the ageing and disability workforce, you may:

  • Receive an offer of employment with your work placement employer
  • Be offered a traineeship in aged care or disability work
  • Have opportunities to use your skills to transition into an allied health occupation
  • Connect with other employment opportunities or complete further studies to gain a further qualification in aged care or disability support
