LASA encourages Australians to tell candidates, ‘I Care for Aged Care’

As Australians prepare to go to the polls on 18 May, Leading Age Services Australia (LASA), the voice of aged care, says the next government of Australia must commit to rapid and fundamental reform if we are to meet the changing needs and expectations of the growing numbers of older Australians.

LASA CEO Sean Rooney says every candidate in this election should stand up and say, ‘I care for aged care’, because it is an issue of national importance.

“This election campaign is about ensuring that older Australians can access the care they need, when they need it, that this care is adequately funded to reflect the actual costs of delivering high quality care and services, and that our sector is supported to attract and train a high performing and compassionate workforce.”

He says last week’s Federal Budget was a missed opportunity to reduce the home care wait list and provide sustainable residential care funding that covers the rising costs of delivering quality care.

“As a nation, we must commit to the growth and development of a highly skilled and accountable aged care workforce.

“A comprehensive strategy for ageing well must also be a priority for the next government.

“The Royal Commission offers our nation and our sector the opportunity to make the aged care system better, but while the Commission is doing its important work we must not lose sight of making Australia’s aged care system better right now.

“Clearly, the current Government does not have a strategy to do this and neither of the major parties has made commitments to the solutions that older Australians are looking for,” Mr Rooney said.

“This election is an opportunity for all parties and candidates to recognise that making the aged care system better is a national priority and one that we simply must get right.

“Older Australians need a better aged care system, and older Australians deserve nothing less.”
