Principal Advisor – Home Care
Troy Speirs commenced his career in the mental health sector as a clinical psychologist over twenty 20 years ago working as clinician, manager and policy officer having accumulated a range of experiences across health and aged care settings.
More recently he has worked in operational management with home care providers since before the commencement of the government’s home care reforms. During this period he has accumulated a comprehensive understanding in operationalising all aspects of home care service management and operations, including staffing, funding, quality reporting and stakeholder engagement.
His experience includes policy development and analysis, program development, implementation and evaluation, operational management, strategic planning, clinical redesign, workforce planning/management, clinical intervention and care planning, consultancy advice, data management and research.
Combined with his enthusiasm and passion for supporting LASA members nationally in the home care space, he has set his sights on making a valued contribution to the LASA team.

Principal Advisor – Retirement Living AND Seniors Housing
Jo Thomason has held senior management and leadership positions in the aged care industry over the last 20 years. With a background in Business, Accounting and Human Resources, Jo has held senior positions with large and small aged care and retirement living providers, including overseeing the management of some of Queensland’s largest retirement villages.
Throughout her career, Jo has been at the forefront of effecting organisational development and change, with a passion for improving systems and processes. Jo has served on the Board of several district hospitals and also been responsible for several large fundraising campaigns for local charities.
Before commencing with LASA, Jo was the General Manager of a unique CALD organisation. In this role Jo was responsible for creating a more recognisable brand for this long established provider and oversaw the building of new facilities as well as rebranding and organisational restructure, developing and improving communication, information and management systems and processes – resulting in workforce stability, improved financial viability and business activities and a well-rounded strategic plan for the future.

Principal Advisor – Residential Aged Care
Sharyn McIlwain commenced her career in aged care over twenty 20 years ago and more recently held the position of Operations Manager for a small private operator.
In her 10 years in this role, Sharyn was responsible for the day to day operations of 140 Residential Aged Care Beds across two sites, one metropolitan and one rural.
As is the case for a lot of small private operators Sharyn had to be across everything from Human resources and budgeting to ACFI funding and the Aged Care Act to being a an amateur counsellor for not only residents and their families but also to staff. And all this while trying to maintain full compliance with the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency. The experience in this position this has given Sharyn great insight and understanding of balancing all the day to day aspects of managing a facility at the coal face.
Sharyn is self-driven and demonstrates a passion to ensure the best quality of life and dignity remains high on her focus for all seniors in all areas of care. Sharyn will continue to drive ‘best practice’ at every level for all LASA members while remaining very aware of the demanding job members have in providing care in a tough environment.
